Symptoms of Middle Back Pain
Middle back pain occurs below the neck and above the bottom of the rib cage, in an area called the thoracic spine. There are 12 back bones — the T1 to T12 vertebrae — located in this area. There are a number of ways the bones, muscles, ligaments, and disks in this spine area can irritate or injure the nerves. Symptoms of mid back pain include:
- Chest pain with breathing
- Tingling or numbness in the arms or chest
- A sharp, burning sensation or stabbing pain sensation mid back (hernia middle back symptoms)
- Muscle tightness or stiffness after a rest period (of sleep, sitting)
What Causes Middle Back Pain?
The causes of this nonspecific mid back pain are related to middle back muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves. This pain is usually a result of straining, inactivity or fatigue. Aches and mid back pain can arise, for example, from:
- Incorrect, prolonged poor posture when sitting or walking
- Strained muscles or joints after exercising
- Too much tension on the back muscles due to fatigue and stress
- Overload or misuse of the muscles due to heavy physical work and incorrect lifting technique
- Depressed posture due to heavy breasts, depression or deteriorated muscle balance
- Sudden wrong movement
- Trauma from a hard fall, sport injury or a car accident
- Weaker abdominal and back muscles from a lack of exercise
- Obesity
The causes of mid back pain can also be attributed to specifically identifiable causes:
- Inter-vertebral bulge, with slipped disks or ruptured disks (hernia, spit)
- Inter-vertebral disc narrowing and degeneration (osteoarthritis, stenosis, facet pain)
- Vertebral collapse due to aging (osteoporosis)
- Congenital abnormalities, S-bend at the spine (scoliosis) or a difference in leg length
- Back muscles play a vital role in blood circulation to the heart. If the back muscles are in a constant state of cramping, without experiencing that as a burden, then there is a risk that this spasmodic posture leads to years of inefficient blood supply to the heart. A back ailment can therefore have a negative effect on the heart function
- Lung ailments caused by smoking, pneumonia, or poor posture are often felt as middle back pain. Lots of coughs with a cold can also cause mid back pain.
- Pelvic tilt (pelvic instability)
Types of Mid Back Pain
Back pain, the middle, in addition to the nonspecific pain and the specific pain, can be classified into 3 different categories depending on the duration and severity of the condition:
- Acute back pain mid back – duration of less than 6 weeks
- Sub-acute middle back complaints – duration from 6 to 12 weeks
- Chronic mid back pain complaints – duration of more than 12 weeks
