The hand is made up of many different bones, muscles, and ligaments that allow for a large amount of movement and dexterity. This makes our wrist sensitive to wear and complaints. We divide these complaints into two categories, depending on the cause of the pain:

A-specific wrist complaints:

Wrist pain can happen to anyone — whether you’re very sedentary, very active or somewhere in between. The non-specific complaints arise, for example, from repetitive stress on the wrist from heavy or repetitive work, sports participation, poor wrist posture, an accident, wear in the wrist and stress.

Do you ever experience pain in the wrist when pushing up? Push-ups and planks are exercises that put a lot of strain on your wrists and forearms. The tendons of your wrist and forearm stretch because you lean on it with your whole body and push the weight of your body up with force. If you do do push ups in a poor position or with sensitive wrists you can hurt your tendons, ligaments and connective tissues as a result. These non-specific complaints often lead to swelling, pain and possibly inflammation.

Specific wrist complaints:

On the other hand, specific complaints have a clear, specific cause. An example is a bone fracture due to a fall on the wrist. This must be determined by means of additional diagnostics. Below you can read more about the complaints, symptoms, causes and treatments for various trauma disorders:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

TFCC (especially complaints on the pinky side)

Unstable wrist (especially complaints on the pinky side)

PT Arthrosis (especially complaints on the pinky side)

De Quervain syndrome (especially wrist complaints thumb side)

Wrist injuries

Broken wrist

Types of Wrist Injuries

We can divide wrist complaints, according to the duration of the pain, into acute and chronic complaints:

Acute wrist injuries:

Acute pain in the wrist means that the pain suddenly arises. Due to acute overstretching, cracks and damage to the disc can occur. i.e. Wrist complaints after falling, where the wrist is in a stretched and twisted position. Acute wrist complaints last typically less than six weeks. They often go away by natural recovery, but treatment ensures that the complaints do not become chronic. Treatment also relieves pain faster. In the event that the complaints come back later, it is advisable to do something about it quickly.

Chronic wrist injuries:

Chronic wrist pain lasts longer than three months. This may be because the wrist is unstable. Chronic wrist complaints affect the performance of your work. Effective treatment can then provide pain relief because the pattern is broken.

Your Treatment for Wrist Pain

Not all wrist pain requires medical care. Minor sprains and strains usually respond to ice, rest and over-the-counter pain medications. But if pain and swelling last longer than a few days or become worse, see your physiotherapist Delayed diagnosis and treatment can lead to poor healing, reduced range of motion and long-term disability.

If you suffer from pain in your wrist, it is first of all important to find out the exact cause of this pain. After an extensive intake, we will identify the cause and determine the appropriate treatment method. There is an adequate approach for every wrist problem. The main objectives of our treatments are summarized as follows:

Reduce pain;

Move more smoothly;

Correct wrist posture;

Increase strength and stability in the wrist through exercises.

The result: a stronger wrist that is free from pain and can move more smoothly.

Behandelmethoden bij polsklachten

Our hand therapist Michelle Klaver is post-college trained in hand therapy.
