Symptoms of Chronic Back Pain Syndrome
Back problems are common. In over 90% of the cases, back problems disappear after an injury heals or an illness runs its course within six weeks. But, some back problems return later even without a known trigger for the pain and then progress to a more persistent back pain. When the problems are continuously present for more than 3 months the condition can be defined as chronic back pain syndrome.
Types of Chronic Back Pain
Back pain symptoms can vary widely depending on the cause and location, the following symptoms can occur:
- Chronic low back pain symptoms:
- Low back pain
- Radiation of pain into buttock, lower legs, knees or feet
- Stinging or burning pain in the lower back
- Dull feeling, numbness and loss of strength in the legs
- A stiff back
- Muscle spasms and tightness in low back, pelvis and hips
- Chronic middle back pain symptoms:
- Chronic upper back pain symptoms:
- Upper back pain
- Pain in the thoracic area of your back, in your neck or just below the neck, between shoulder blades
Chronic pain often causes disturbed sleep-patterns as research shows. This makes you feel tired, stiff and not well rested. It can also cause annoyance and stress. As a result of the stress response, excessive muscle activity can develop, which makes back pain worse. When excessive muscle activity plays a role, you can also suffer from other stress complaints such as neck pain, pelvic instability, shoulder pain, headache and fatigue.
Causes of Chronic Back Pain
We can divide back pain into two types, depending on the cause of the pain.
Aspecific back pain
Nonspecific back pain (<95%) arises, for example, from poor posture, overload due to heavy work, muscle imbalance from repetitive work, inflammation from an accident, degeneration due to age and stress. Typical complaints consist of a stiff back, low back pain or high back pain. These problems can develop into chronic back pain problems. For example, because patients delay seeking help and treatment due to apathy or fear. Problems can also linger because cause factors are constant such as poor (work) posture, overload and stress at work or sport or an inactive lifestyle.
Specific back pain
Specific back problems (> 5%) have a clear physical cause. A disease or anomaly that often needs to be diagnosed through additional diagnostics. For example:
- Pelvic Instability
- Facet Pain
- Hernia
- Sciatica
- Acute Back Pain or Spit
- Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain
- Spondylolysis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Stenosis
- Metastases from breast or prostate cancer
Specific back problems can also be located in different places or throughout the spine, for example:
- Arthrosis
- Scoliosis
- Osteoporosis
