Common Causes of Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common complaint and can be caused by various injuries or strains. For some patients, this pain is acute, lasting a short period of time. For others, chronic neck pain can be a serious problem. Neck pain can originate from a number of causes such as neck muscle strains, worn joints, cervical nerve compression, diseases, or injuries. Neck injuries can occur at any time for a variety of reasons, but factors as your age and occupation can make this condition more likely.
Muscles in the neck can be strained from a poor posture and holding your head in the same position for a long period of time. It can also be caused by a motor vehicle accident or fall in which your neck has suffered a major blow. There are also causes which are less common, such as a herniated disc, swollen lymph nodes, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylosis, osteoarthritis, a vertebral fracture, cancer or external stress.
Types of Neck Pain
Neck injuries are divided into specific and nonspecific neck injury categories, but also into chronic and acute injuries.
1. Specific Injuries
Specific neck injuries consist of “wear and tear” degeneration in the neck, a neck hernia or osteoarthritis. With age and use cartilage can wear down and the ligaments, muscles, and tendons can become damaged. Poor sleeping positions, or seating postures, or repetitive motions at work can contribute to specific neck injuries.
2. Non-specific Injuries
Non-specific injuries are the most common. They are mainly due to a muscle strain or other soft tissue sprain (ligaments, tendons) or from straining the neck (such as a stiff neck from sleeping in the wrong position, or a strain from carrying a heavy item).
3. Whiplash
This type of neck injury often arises from a sudden force. A movement of the head back and forth. Pain from a whiplash can often persist for a long period of time.
Your Neck Pain Treatment
The most common types of mild to moderate neck pain usually recover on it’s own with rest within two or three weeks. If pain persists, physiotherapy is a great step to take to ease pain, improve functionality and prevent chronic pain in the future.
